w/c 6th January

Happy New Year! and welcome back.

Our topic for this term is “Out of this World” and in English this week we have started to learn about the planets. The children have learned the names of the planets, labelled them and have talked about the difference between planets, moons and stars. We have used our reading skills to find information about the planets and will be using this next week. We have also learned about commas and how to use them in a list.

In maths we have been recapping addition. The children have been “counting on”. This means putting one number in your head and counting on the other number. For example, 6+4=. You would put the number 6 in your head and count on 4 to reach the answer. We have also been learning all the pairs of number that total 10 and trying to make sure we can recall them quickly. Any chance to practice these at home would be really helpful. They are: 0+10=10, 1+9=10, 2+8=10, 3+7=10, 4+6=10, 5+5=10, 6+4=10, 7+3=10, 8+2=10, 9+1=10, 10+0=10.

We have started our topic this week with a “knowledge harvest”. The children have been thinking about all the things they already know about space and what things they might like to learn more about.
