14th October 2019

We can’t believe that we are already at the end of our first half term! We are really proud of how well the children have settled in to Year 2. We have had lots of applications for Team Captain roles and the children have been enjoying their new bib responsibilities at break and lunch time.

English

Last week we had a go at writing Goldilocks a letter and she sneaked into the classroom and read them all! She left a trail of porridge and the books were messy but she also left us a letter. The children have been working really hard this week to reply to her letter- answering questions and asking her some questions.

Maths

In Mrs Ellis’s maths group we have been thinking about addition and subtraction. We have looked at number bonds to 100, what happens when you add and subtract ones (e.g. 20+1=21, 20+2=22, 20+3=23), what happens when we add and subtract 10s (e.g. 13+10=23, 13-10=3).

In Mrs Prophet’s maths group they have been thinking about addition and subtraction using fact families within 10 (e.g. 4+6=10, 6+4=10, 10-6=4, 10-4=6).

Here is a great game all children can play at home with counting https://www.topmarks.co.uk/learning-to-count/helicopter-rescue

and also addition and subtraction https://www.topmarks.co.uk/learning-to-count/chopper-squad

Science

This half term our science lessons have been linked to our topic Carnival of the Animals. We have been learning about animal life cycles and starting to explore animal habitats.

7th October 2019

English

This week in English we have been reading the traditional tale Goldilocks and the Three Bears. We have also been thinking about letters- why people send them, different types of letters and the features of letters. As part of your home learning you could share any letters you get and teach your child your home address which would be written at the top of a letter! Next week all children will be writing a letter independently.

Maths

In Mrs Prophets maths children have been learning how to count in multiples of 2, 5 and 10 using a range of resources. They have also been learning number bonds to 10- these are 2 numbers that add up to 10 e.g. 9+1=10, 8+2=10. As part of their home learning children could count 2ps, 5ps or 10ps.

In Mrs Ellis’s maths children have begun to think about addition and subtraction. We have recapped number bonds to 10, been learning number bonds to 20, learning how to check calculations (all children got to become the teacher and mark some of Mrs Ellis’s work!) and compare number sentences.

30th September 2019

Thank you to everyone who was able to make it to our first reading event and also for the fantastic feedback. We apologise again to Mrs Ellis’s parents for the mix up with the sheets!

English

In English this week we have carried on thinking about writing recounts. After the exciting visit from Mini Monsters on Friday the children were really excited to write about what had happened. We have been focusing on writing in the past tense, using sequencing words and writing about how we were feeling. The children came up with some fantastic words!

Winston the bearded dragon

Maths

In maths this week we have been thinking about counting up to 100 in multiples of 2, 3, 5 and 10! We have learnt how to play the game fizz buzz- this is a great game you can play at home! We have also been using a 100 square and number line to help us count. Here is a great interactive 100 square you can use at home… https://www.topmarks.co.uk/learning-to-count/paint-the-squares

Using the 100 square to help us count in 5s

Christmas Cards

We hate the use the ‘C’ word in October but the children have been busy designing and making their Christmas cards. We will be sending out a letter as soon as they are ready and you will be able to place an order online. The order deadline is WEDNESDAY 16TH OCTOBER. The artwork will need to be returned by this date so it can be sent off to print.

Thank you

Thank you to all those parents that were able to make it to the Year 2 information sessions. We hope you found these useful but please feel free to come and ask us anything you’re unsure of. We have also sent home an example of a timetable so you can see what we get up to in a normal week.

English

Ginger the guinea pig

This week in English we are thinking about writing recounts- events or experiences which have happened. At the beginning of the week Mr Morgan brought in some special visitors for us to meet but they went missing! Luckily after lots of searching Poppy, Fluffy and Ginger were found safe and sound in the Green Dragons room.

This week we are thinking about using time words such as first, next, then, after that, finally to talked about what has happened. We are also learning about past tense verbs- we looked for the guineapigs; we found them.

Maths

In maths we have continued to look at place value. The children have been working really hard to compare and order numbers. We have been using our knowledge of place value to solve simple problems. We have also been starting to count in multiples of 2, 5 and 10. We have been using numicon, tens and ones and coins to help us to see the patterns in counting. It would be great if you can continue to support your child with this at home. You could…

  • use pairs of socks or shoes to count in 2s
  • collects 2p, 5p and 10p coins to count
  • count in 5s to see how many fingers and toes are in your house!

Science

In science we have been learning about the life cycle. The children worked really well in groups to create a life cycle of a chicken. Can they share the key words with you at home? (Birth, growth, reproduction).

Welcome

Mrs Desborough

We would like to welcome Laura Desborough to the KS1 team. She will be with us for 8 weeks this Autumn term as part of her initial teacher training and then she will return in the summer term. She will be primarily working in Mrs Ellis’s class.

Maths

Using a place value chart

This week in maths we have continued to look at place value. We have been using part whole models and place value charts to write number sentences. We have also begun to use our knowledge of place value to think about more than, less than and equal to. Here is a great game your child can play at home… https://www.topmarks.co.uk/learning-to-count/place-value-basketball

English

Mrs Ellis’s story map for The Giraffe Who Came to Tea

This week in English we have continued to look at the story The Tiger Who Came to Tea by Judith Kerr. The children have been thinking about the sequence of the story- what happens in the beginning, middle and end; creating a story map for their story of an animal that came to tea; writing their own stories. The children got the chance to use their purple books for the first time this week. The work in here is completely independent and a chance for children to show us what they’ve learnt. Each time they write in these we will look out for a writer of the week.

9th September 2019

This week in English we have been reading the story The Tiger Who Came to Tea by Judith Kerr. The children have been recapping on what a verb is – a verb is simply a doing or action word. They were able to identify lots of verbs in the story and also think of different verbs that could be used. We have also been learning about expanded noun phrases- here is a great video you can watch. https://www.bbc.co.uk/bitesize/articles/z3nfw6f Next week the children will be writing their own version of the story!

Image result for place value

In maths we have been thinking about place value. We have been using tens and ones, numicon and arrow cards to create 2 digit numbers. We know that the different digits have different values- for example the number 12 is made up of the digits 1 and 2 but we know that the 1 is worth 10 and the 2 is worth 2.

We have been busy in ICT creating artwork for our topic books. We have been using a program on Purple Mash.

Image result for carnival of the animals

This term PE will usually be on Mondays for Mrs Ellis’s class and Tuesdays for Mrs Prophet’s class. We will be learning some animals inspired dance to go alongside our topic Carnival of the Animals.

Next Tuesday 17th September the library van will be visiting. Please remember to send in any books that need to be returned and your child’s library card if they would like to borrow a new library book.

Mini Monsters

You will all have received a letter home about our Mini Monsters visit. If you have any questions regarding this please see a member of the Year 2 team.

Please sign up for our Year 2 information sessions. The will give you a quick guide on what to expect in Year 2. The dates for these are:

Welcome to Year 2

Welcome to the Year 2 blog. We hope you all had a fantastic summer- we’ve heard about lots of the exciting things you have all been up to!

This week we are getting the children settled in and used to their new classrooms and staff. The children have been…

  • going on a treasure hunt to get used to where things are
  • learning about about the new responsibilities such as bib jobs and door monitors
  • talking about and writing applications for team captain positions
  • writing about what we have done during the holidays
  • thinking about our new topic ‘Carnival of the Animals’

Singing bibs teaching other children ‘In and Out the Dusty Bluebells’

Litter pickers tidying up the field

Our regular PE days will be Mondays but please try to have a P.E. kit at all times as this will some times change. A newsletter has been sent home which will hopefully answer any questions you might have. If you do have any questions, worries or concerns please come in and speak to a member of staff- we’re always happy to help.

Image result for sikhism and buddhism

This week we have been learning about the religions Sikhism and Buddhism. The children have learnt about some traditions and celebrations and linked these to some of our own traditions and celebrations. When learning about Buddhism we learnt that Buddhists like to meditate so they can reflect. We meditated and thought about things which made us kind and thoughtful. Here’s some lovely music you can to listen if you want to meditate at home…https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=rANBirgrLfk&safe=active

Image result for algorithm for kids

We have also been learning about algorithms in ICT. An algorithm is a list of rules to follow in order to solve a problem. Algorithms need to have their steps in the right order. Think about an algorithm for getting dressed in the morning. What if you put on your coat before your jumper? Your jumper would be on top of your coat and that would be silly! When you write an algorithm the order of the instructions is very important. https://www.bbc.com/bitesize/articles/z3whpv4

Alongside all of this the children have continued to rehearse their show. Doors will open at 9am.

End of year show – Wednesday 10th July (RE parents) and Thursday 11th July (JW parents)

Summer Fair – Friday 12th July

Sports week – Monday 15th July (all week)

Sports Day & Family Picnic – Friday 19th July

Last day of term – Wednesday 24th July

24th June 2019

This week the children have been really busy planning and writing their Mixed Up Fairy Tale stories. They have amazed us with their creativity! The children have worked hard to use ambitious vocabulary and a range of punctuation. We are looking forward to sharing these with you at the summer fair.

In maths we have been looking at comparing weight. We have been using the symbols < > = to compare items which are heavier and lighter and then using digital scales to find the difference between these items.

The children have also been really busy getting ready for the year 2 leavers show. We hope you can all make it (please see the dates below- you are welcome to attend either show if you cannot make the one for your class, the performances will be the same!)

As the end of year is quickly approaching we won’t be replacing the children’s reading diaries. We will still record when we have read with your children and ask you to do the same but just on a piece of paper slipped inside.

Mrs Ellis has an apple which weighs 200g. Mrs Wade has an apple that weighs 150g. Who has the heaviest apple? Who has the lightest apple? Can you work out the difference in weight between the 2 apples?

Don’t forget to write it in into the Home Learning book and bring it in to show us!
