14th October 2019

We can’t believe that we are already at the end of our first half term! We are really proud of how well the children have settled in to Year 2. We have had lots of applications for Team Captain roles and the children have been enjoying their new bib responsibilities at break and lunch time.

English

Last week we had a go at writing Goldilocks a letter and she sneaked into the classroom and read them all! She left a trail of porridge and the books were messy but she also left us a letter. The children have been working really hard this week to reply to her letter- answering questions and asking her some questions.

Maths

In Mrs Ellis’s maths group we have been thinking about addition and subtraction. We have looked at number bonds to 100, what happens when you add and subtract ones (e.g. 20+1=21, 20+2=22, 20+3=23), what happens when we add and subtract 10s (e.g. 13+10=23, 13-10=3).

In Mrs Prophet’s maths group they have been thinking about addition and subtraction using fact families within 10 (e.g. 4+6=10, 6+4=10, 10-6=4, 10-4=6).

Here is a great game all children can play at home with counting https://www.topmarks.co.uk/learning-to-count/helicopter-rescue

and also addition and subtraction https://www.topmarks.co.uk/learning-to-count/chopper-squad

Science

This half term our science lessons have been linked to our topic Carnival of the Animals. We have been learning about animal life cycles and starting to explore animal habitats.

Reception Blog 14.10.19

This week we are continuing with the theme of traditional stories and the book we are reading this week is Goldilocks and the Three Bears.

In maths we are working on counting accurately. We read the book Kipper’s Toybox where we had to help Kipper count his toys accurately. We have taught the children that it is easier to line the objects up and touch each object as you say the number name. If you’d like to practise this at home that would be great. There are also some counting games on Education city.

This weeks number is 4 and the rhyme is 4, 4, knock at the door. The action is knocking at the door.

We are also playing some listening and attention games such as kims game where objects are placed on the floor, the children shut their eyes and we take one away and they have to remember what the objects were and say the missing object and we will do a listening walk where we focus on the sounds we can hear in the environment and try to identify what they are.

Don’t forget to order Christmas cards today and then send the designs back in to enter the competition.

Please send in any spare 5ps for the class bottles and if you shop in Aldi ask for a sports token at the end of your shop – there is a collection pot for these in the library.

Have a good week and we hope you all have a lovely restful half term!

w/c 7th October

First of all a huge “thank you” to all the parents, grandparents and friends who came to the Year 1 reading event this week. It was lovely to have so much support and the children really enjoyed showing you what they can do.

In addition to our reading event, this week in English the children have been reading the story of “Goldilocks and the 3 Bears” We have sequenced the story and written a letter to the Bears from Goldilocks. We are waiting for a reply as we asked lots of questions. Hopefully it will arrive next week.

In Maths we have been adding and finding the totals. We have learnt the symbols “+” and “=” and written our own number sentences. We have been using something called the “Part/Whole Model” and the children have become very confident using it.

English

This week in English we have been reading the traditional tale Goldilocks and the Three Bears. We have also been thinking about letters- why people send them, different types of letters and the features of letters. As part of your home learning you could share any letters you get and teach your child your home address which would be written at the top of a letter! Next week all children will be writing a letter independently.

Maths

In Mrs Prophets maths children have been learning how to count in multiples of 2, 5 and 10 using a range of resources. They have also been learning number bonds to 10- these are 2 numbers that add up to 10 e.g. 9+1=10, 8+2=10. As part of their home learning children could count 2ps, 5ps or 10ps.

In Mrs Ellis’s maths children have begun to think about addition and subtraction. We have recapped number bonds to 10, been learning number bonds to 20, learning how to check calculations (all children got to become the teacher and mark some of Mrs Ellis’s work!) and compare number sentences.

We are starting to have a weekly story where both classes join together, listen to a story and start to act it out. The theme is traditional tales because we would like to introduce the key elements of a traditional tale like the language, the characters, the setting and the events. The story this week is Little Red Riding Hood.

We are also looking at a number of the week and this week the number is 3 – there is an action to go with each number – ask your child to see if they can remember 1 and 2! This is to get the children to know the numbers really well and instantly recognise them and know what the number means.

We are also carrying on with the art work after designing our christmas cards last week. This week the children will be doing self portraits using paint. We will look carefully at the features on our faces and recreate them in a painting. The children will also use technology for a purpose and take selfies using an iPad.

We are starting dough disco this week to build up the children’s fine motor skills so that their fingers will be stronger to write and draw.

We are continuing to assess the children as we’re not quite finished!

You will get the children’s Christmas card designs this week – please order if you would like to and then send the designs back in. The ordering process is quite straight forward using the online system and the code on the Christmas card forms. All designs need to come back to school as they get entered into a competition regardless of if you have ordered them or not.

We have also started Marvellous Me where a child in the class is chosen and each child says a marvellous thing about them. They get to wear a medal and get to be first in the line. They also get to sit in a special chair!

Have a good week!

30th September 2019

Following our visit from Jimmy the Tortoise last Friday, in English this week, we have been planning and writing a recount of his visit. The children have been using words such as, first, next, then and finally to describe the day.

In maths this week the children have been learning about comparing amounts and numbers. We are very good at using the words “greater than” and “less than”. We watched “Numberblocks – Blockzilla” and then made our own “Blockzilla” monster symbols to try out. The children should have brought those home to tell you all about them. Here is a clip of Blockzilla. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=_GQtIUEEeRE

Thank you to everyone who was able to make it to our first reading event and also for the fantastic feedback. We apologise again to Mrs Ellis’s parents for the mix up with the sheets!

English

In English this week we have carried on thinking about writing recounts. After the exciting visit from Mini Monsters on Friday the children were really excited to write about what had happened. We have been focusing on writing in the past tense, using sequencing words and writing about how we were feeling. The children came up with some fantastic words!

In maths this week we have been thinking about counting up to 100 in multiples of 2, 3, 5 and 10! We have learnt how to play the game fizz buzz- this is a great game you can play at home! We have also been using a 100 square and number line to help us count. Here is a great interactive 100 square you can use at home… https://www.topmarks.co.uk/learning-to-count/paint-the-squares
